Alabama DUI Defense Attorney Weighs In on Latest DUI Bill in Alabama Legislature
Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) March 5, 2008 -- Joseph C. Kreps, renowned Alabama DUI Defense Attorney, says that the current session of the Alabama Legislature could give rise to even more laws that will continue to entangle the otherwise complex web of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) statutes in this state. One bill sponsored by Representative Dunn, a democrat from Bessemer, will require the use of a Certified Ignition Interlock for someone convicted of Driving Under the Influence in Alabama. The blood alcohol content (BAC) of the vehicle operator will be measured and will prevent the vehicles operation if BAC level exceeds 0.05 percent. Alabama DUI Law offenders will generally be required to cover the costs of installation, rental, and maintenance of the device and will be required to obtain special notations on their drivers license at significant expense.
Drinking to the point of impairment and driving is dangerous and should not be condoned. However, several problems have been noted with the Ignition Interlock System as a deterrent for driving drunk in Alabama. One of the major issues is whether Alabama DUI Defense offenders will follow the law and whether the State has a solid plan to enforce the law. Some states already requiring the Interlock Device have found that it is ineffective to prevent multiple offenders from getting behind the wheel. Also, the current bill will cost otherwise cash-strapped DUI offenders thousands of dollars and the overall effort will likely cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars through the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
Education and treatments of alcohol abuse are the most effective solutions to curb the systemic problem of multiple offense DUI offenders in Alabama. Smokers continue to smoke even though it will likely kill them because nicotine is addictive. Drinkers will continue to drink and get behind the wheel because of their addictions to the chemical or social effects of alcohol. With education and treatment, we can help to make the roads and highways of Alabama safe for all of us and our families.
